Love, Peace & Joy – is my prayer for you in 2020.

I am stepping into 2020, a new year and the new decade with Love, Peace & Joy as “tassels on the corners of my garments…. so I will remember all the commands of the Lord, that I may obey them…."^[1] , a “reminder on my forehead that this law of the LORD is to be on my lips" ^[2] and written in the way I live my everyday life. I want to speak Love, Peace & Joy for one reason only, because Jesus, Immanuel, “God with us" ^[3], has come to give us life. Because of His love we can love, because of His offer we can have eternal life, peace & joy.

And in 2020 “I will tell of the Lords unfailing love. I will praise the Lord for all he has done. I will rejoice in his great goodness…., which he has granted according to his mercy and love." ^[4]

New Year’s Prayer

Lord, we are standing at the beginning of a new year and a new decade. It feels burdensome to imagine the next 10 years of our lives in our modern-day cultural turmoil as the news stations blare out the intensified chaos in our world. The world feels like a scary place. The unknown future is suffocating.

But you know, Lord. You know us very dearly, you know us by name, you love us and care about the details in our lives. You know the deep waters that we have walked through, the despicable things we have done, where we are currently and what the future holds. “God only knows”.^[5] It brings peace to know that you know, Lord; that you care and that nothing can separate us from your love, no height, no depth and nothing that we’ve ever done. Your love drives out all our fears.

We are grateful for your love and “You have never failed us” ^[6], and you will not in future. You fight for us and “you rescue us”.^[7] You have been and will forever be working all for our good.

Today we choose not to focus on all that’s overwhelming, but rather on the known truths and your promises. We choose to remember that you are God and that you are in control. You are faithful, good, holy, omnipresent, omniscient, just and sovereign. You love us so much that you have given your only Son, Jesus, to pay with his life for us so that we could be forgiven, and our transgressions removed as far as the west is from the east. Because of Jesus we can share in the privilege of your eternal family.

Father, I ask to open our eyes to see, our minds to understand what really matters, our ears to hear the need of the ones around us and to stir compassion in our hearts for what is important to you. Help us to love like you love. Holy Spirit guide us with wisdom and insight, “when to go and when to stay”^[8] in the confusing times. Thank you, Holy Spirit, for carrying our groans as prayers to God the Father, thank you Jesus for praying for us.

Lord, please bless us with -

an understanding of your love, our deliverance and freedom through the cross and an awareness of the guidance by the Holy Spirit in our everyday encounters; peace in our minds that transcends all understanding;

protection of our mind, body and soul;

strength to hold onto your promises;

boldness to stand strong in our faith;

health and wellness; and an understanding of the privilege to share the good news with our fellow sojourners.

We love you Lord, and we praise you. Thank you for providing all we need to live a godly life. We ask in the name of Jesus our Savior. Amen
